Be Sure to File Your Employment Tax Returns, Or Else

Most times, household employers run afoul of the law by paying their household help “under the table” and not withholding the proper employment taxes. But by paying your nanny legally, and withholding taxes from her pay, creates a trust relationship between you and the government with regard to those withheld taxes. If you withhold employment taxes, and then fail to pay those taxes over to the government, you likewise face substantial liability as a “responsible person” under federal (and most states’) tax laws. In US v. Hastings (W.D. Mo. 2015), a bookkeeper for a small business who willfully failed to [...]

Daycare vs Nanny

Growing up I always wanted to be a stay at home mom. As I got older reality set in and I realized that might not be an option for me. Plan B was derived: if I had to work and so did my husband we would want a loving nanny to care for our child and help around the house with light chores. Daycare was last on our list - simply because we had no experience with daycare in our families. Sure enough in 2012 our little boy arrived and we are a working parental team and like many other [...]

4 Tips to Beat Summertime Boredom

“I’m bored!” a quote by kids that we, as parents and yes even nannies, will hear once or twice this summer. How do you fix boredom for kids? Offer options. Not just your options but let them jump in on the action too and make it fun. Knowing my kid is a typical boy and go, go, go from morning til night… I like to not only offer activity options but also a little structure to the day. It helps keep me sane and him busy within reason. Here are a few ideas: Plan a BIG Activity Each Month for [...]

Is Nanny Camp for Real?

It’s the summer… you may or may not be taking a vacation. For some you many choose to bring your nanny others may choose to give time off. What if there was a Nanny Camp? Ok well maybe not a real camp, but a chance for you to invest in your employee and take full advantage this time when you kids are with you! Think about it… many successful businesses live by the motto - invest in your employees to invest in your company. It works the same way with your household employees. Just In Case – Preparing for an Emergency

As a Mom and a former nanny - my biggest fear is what if there is an emergency! Thanks to technology (when I was a nanny it was a laminated paper) and use of smartphones - help can be just a click away. I am able to keep all relevant medical information and contacts in an online secure document for my husband and I to access or even the nanny or weekend babysitter. I also I have [...]

Picky, Picky Eaters with No Options

After school can be a drag for kids especially elementary school age. They get off the bus or get picked up and the first thing they want to do is grab a snack if they are not already playing.  Of course they are hungry they just had a full afternoon of learning and it’s time to eat. For many parents and nannies the goal is to get the kids to eat healthy, not just chips and soda. The challenge is convincing them to eat healthy especially when the individual bag of chips is sitting right in the pantry. A fun [...]

A Time Warp or A Time Suck?

Keeping it all straight is never easy in life or paying your employees. Especially when you have to log and track the daily and weekly hours your nanny or household employees. When it comes time to cut a check you have to turn to the ‘timecard:’ what days did the work? and how long? Even if you pay your household employees every week or other week - keeping track of the hours put in can be a hassle. If your household employee is on salary there is no math needed, but sometimes it is nice to know when they are [...]

Legal Rights as a Nanny & Home Employer

As a nanny or other type of in home caregiver, why should you insist on being paid legally rather than “under the table”? At first glance, the benefits of tax-free income may seem enticing but take a closer look at what you are losing and you will see that the trade off is far costlier. When you are paid “under the table” you are not officially an employee and hence, are automatically waiving all of the rights and protections the law affords to you as such. From a practical perspective, being an in home caregiver is very physical work. By [...]
